LOSC : the first French club to join the UNFCCC’s Climate Neutral Now initiative

Aware of not just its social but also its environmental role, LOSC wishes to act sustainably and concretely for the well-being of our planet. It is to that end that LOSC has today decided to engage in the UNFCCC's Climate Neutral Now programme - which combats global warming - with the aim of eventually achieving carbon neutrality in all of the club's activities.

What is the Climate Neutral Now programme ?

Conceived in 2015 by the United Nations (through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat – UNFCCC secretariat), the Climate Neutral Now initiative encourages organizations and, more generally, focal points in the social community, to act voluntarily to measure, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions. The objective, shared by a growing number of large international companies, is therefore to aim for carbon neutrality with a view to combating global warming and climate change.

I. Measure, II. Reduce, III. Compensate

As part of the programme, LOSC has had the ecological impact of its daily activities measured; in particular, the movement of its different teams (Pro, Pro 2, Women), by the independent firm Muxia and in line with methodologies approved by the UN. Having taken steps to control this impact (while maintaining certain practices inherent in its activity and necessary for competitiveness), LOSC is also now committed to offsetting the carbon footprint of its activities. But in what way ? By contributing to the financing of a project for which the effect of greenhouse gas emissions is certified by the United Nations, thereby guaranteeing the integrity and thoroughness of the action.

LOSC is the first French club to obtain this UN recognition

By acting in a concrete, immediate and sustainable way, LOSC becomes the very first French sports club to join the UNFCCC’s Climate Neutral Now program, the aim being to achieve carbon neutrality in the long term. Through this completely new initiative in French top-level sport, LOSC is more than ever part of an active and concrete approach to environmental and sustainable action. Just last June, the Lille-based club signed the Charter of 15 eco-responsible commitments promoted by the Ministry of Sports and the NGO, WWF France.

Marc Ingla (LOSC CEO)

"We are all responsible for the global warming emergency. At LOSC, we decided not to wait and to act concretely by taking our immediate part in civic engagement for the planet. So we have taken the initiative to take stock of our own emissions and reduce them where possible. And through our membership of the Climate Neutral Now programme and our investment, the non-reducible part will now be offset by the funding of a sustainable project, certified by the UN. But beyond this action, we wish to raise awareness and invite all those who love LOSC to take personal action that benefits the environment; because climate change is everyone's business."

And you too; take action against global warming

In 2015, member states of the UN reached a historic agreement to step up action to tackle climate change. The central ambition of this Paris Agreement is to keep the rise in global temperature below 2 ° C. To achieve this objective, relying solely on government action will not be enough. We all have a role to play. Businesses and citizens must act without delay by measuring and reducing their carbon footprint.
